We recognize Alaska youth, ages 12-19, statewide. Nominations can be submitted for an individual or a group.
Nominations can come from anyone who wishes to recognize a hard-working Alaska teenager. Nominations can be made in one of 8 categories. Recommendations often come from school staff and board members; youth clubs and organizations; the business community or other teenagers. Any community member inspired by a teen’s efforts can submit a nomination.
Each young person or group who is nominated receives a congratulations packet from Spirit of Youth and a certificate, which is presented at a public gathering. Each nominee is also considered for our Spirit of Youth radio series, which broadcasts to nearly 100 Alaska communities.
Spirit of Youth is excited to partner with KTUU-TV and the University of Alaska College Savings Plan to continue to support outstanding Alaska youth and better share their stories. KTUU’s Channel 2 News will feature Spirit of Youth nominees monthly during the school year, as part of its ongoing “Spotlight on Youth” series. The feature stories will also be posted on the “Spotlight on Youth” section of KTUU.com. “Spotlight on Youth,” on the Channel 2 NewsHour, is dedicated to featuring students making a difference and the latest trends in Alaska education.
Nominees are eligible to be selected for the Spirit of Youth Award each year. Eight nominees are chosen by the Spirit of Youth Teen Advisory Council to receive the award. Individual award recipients will receive a scholarship from the UA College Savings Plan of at least $2,000 and eight runners-up will each receive a $500 scholarship. Group recipients receive a grant to support their efforts.
